Knowledge Transfer (discussion groups)

The objective of this programme was to assist the development and transfer of knowledge on key aspects of farmers’ business including profitability, environmental sustainability, breeding and animal health measures and also Raise awareness of issues relating to Farm Health & Safety and Farm Progression. Participants in the Knowledge Transfer programme were required to attend a minimum of five Knowledge Transfer Group meetings per year, or at least four meetings and no more than one Department accredited national event.

GLAS

GLAS is the Agri-environment scheme, part of the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. The scheme is green as it preserves our traditional hay meadows and low-input pastures; low-carbon as it retains the carbon stocks in soil through margins, habitat preservation and practices such as minimum tillage; and  Agri-environment as it promotes agricultural actions, which introduce or continue to apply agricultural production methods compatible with the protection of the environment, water quality, the landscape and its features, endangered species of flora and fauna and climate change mitigation.

BPS 2021

The Basic Payment Scheme was introduced in 2015 replacing the Single Farm Payment. To qualify for the BPS you must be an active farmer; manage land and be involved in an agricultural activity.
Farmers in receipt of BPS payments may also be eligible for a Greening “top-up”.
You can also apply for the following schemes through your BPS application: ANC ( Areas of Natural Constraint), Protein Aid, Organic Farming and continued participation in the Young Farmers Scheme. A BPS application is required for participation and payment in all schemes.

BDGP

The Beef Data Genomics Programme main overall objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the continuous improvement of maternal genetics of the Irish suckler herd while simultaneously making a positive impact on the profitability of the farming sector. This 6-year scheme which runs in conjunction with the Rural Development program 2014-2020 has received approval to be extended for the year 2021.

BEEP-S

The BEEP-S (Beef Environmental Efficiency Programme- Suckler) scheme aims to further increase environmental efficiency through collecting performance data in the suckler herd. This scheme targets the weaning efficiency of suckler cows and calves through numerous actions. Action 1 which is a mandatory action involves the live weighing of cows and progeny, the second action which is optional aims to improve the welfare of suckler calves through either meal feeding pre and post-weaning or implementing a vaccination programme to prevent respiratory diseases such as pneumonia. The final action requires dung samples to be obtained to determine the faecal egg count and control the risk of liver and rumen fluke contraction in adult suckler cows. Payments from the scheme will vary dependent on the number actions implemented as well as the number of cow/calf pairs. The deadline for entrants into this scheme is the 26th of April 2021.

REAP

Results-based Environment-Agri Pilot is a two year project to test the results-based model on a national scale. Results based environmental schemes reward farmers by linking payments to the quality of environmental improvements “in-field”.
Payments are linked to the nature quality of the farm; fields, boundaries and margins are assessed using specific indicators linked to environmental values.
Farmers will have a chance to increase their score (and therefore payments) in the second year by making changes to their land management or by implementing complementary actions.

BEAM

The objective of the BEAM (Beef Exceptional Aid Measure) scheme is to reduce the national carbon footprint by decreasing the nitrates output on bovine livestock holdings. This scheme requires farmers to reduce their nitrogen manure output by 5% in comparison to their nitrates level in the base year of July 2018 to June 2019. Applicants initially had up until June 2021 to achieve the 5% reduction, however, the deadline has been extended up until 31st December 2021. Any applicants that have achieved the deadline by June 2021 that have applied for the extension will automatically be successful in the programme come June, otherwise you will have the extended period up until date December 2021.

Dairy Beef Calf Programme

The aim of the dairy beef calf programme is to facilitate the smooth integration of dairy calves into the beef herd by providing support for farmers who are rearing progeny from the dairy herd. The goal of this scheme is to further improve performance of the beef herd and to increase the economic and environmental efficiency of the beef herd from the dairy herd. Payments of €20 per eligible calf weighted with a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 20 calves. Eligibility is based on that fact that the calf is progeny from a dairy dam. Calves must be 12 weeks old before weighing and all weights uploaded to ICBF. The closing date for receipt of a valid application is Monday 26th April 2021.
